আধুনিককালে ইংরেজী stage-এর প্রতিশব্দ রূপ বাংলাতে 'রঙ্গমঞ্চ', 'নাট্যশালা' প্রভৃতি শব্দ ব্যবহৃত হয়ে থাকে। পাশ্চাত্য দৃষ্টিকোণে stage-এর সংজ্ঞা হল- "The space in which actors perform a play usually a raised platform. In traditional Theatres the stage is an area like a room. Of which one of the walls has been removed, allowing the audience to see the action there in An apron stage justs out towards the audience."১ পাশ্চাত্য stage শব্দটি এসেছে ল্যাটিন শব্দ 'stare' থেকে যার অর্থ 'to stand' বা দাঁড়ানোর স্থুল অর্থাৎ অভিনয়স্থল।
