Ifor Evans was Provost of University College, Lon- don, from 1951 to 1966. Previously he was Principal of Queen Mary College and earlier still a Professor of English in the University of London. He was knighted in 1955 and made a life peer in 1967, taking the title of Baron Evans of Hungershall. He was well known as a literary critic and historian and for his television appearances.
